Ford Ranger Platinum review 2024

The Ford Ranger Platinum is the latest enhancement in the Ranger lineup, positioned above the Wildtrak but below the Ranger MS-RT, establishing itself as Ford’s most refined “standard” pickup.

This isn’t just an ordinary truck—it's among the most luxurious pickups available, and for good reason.

Distinguishing Features: Ranger Platinum vs. Wildtrak

The Platinum variant introduces a strikingly upgraded front design. Building on the tradition of the Platinum branding seen in U.S. models like the F-150 Lightning, the Ranger Platinum adopts a premium, chrome-accented look. Key visual elements include "Platinum" lettering on the hood and chrome highlights on the grille, surround, and headlights. While it shares the Wildtrak's 18-inch wheels, the Platinum’s wheels feature a unique matte Asphalt Black finish.

Inside, the Platinum offers enhanced comfort, such as air-cooled, ventilated front seats, which are more advanced than the Wildtrak's heated seats. These come with a 10-way adjustment system and memory settings for up to three positions. Upholstery is exclusively leather, complemented by an upgraded B&O sound system with 10 speakers, borrowed from the Raptor.

Standard features also include Intelligent Speed Assistance, a 360-degree parking camera, and automated parking functions, further emphasizing its premium positioning.

Powertrain and Performance

The Platinum is equipped with the flagship 3.0-liter V6 diesel engine, delivering 236 hp and 600 Nm of torque. It features a 10-speed automatic transmission and full-time selectable four-wheel drive, complete with a low-range mode for off-road use.

Interior Comfort and Tech

The cabin of the Ranger Platinum rivals that of high-end SUVs. It features a 12-inch central touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a wireless phone charging pad. The black leather seats, wood-effect accents, and heated steering wheel add a sense of luxury. Despite its powerful engine, the interior remains quiet, even at high speeds, with engine noise kept minimal.

Driving Dynamics

The V6 engine provides impressive torque, making the truck quick to respond when needed. The ride is well-damped, and the steering is precise and more intuitive compared to rivals like the Toyota Hilux. However, the high power output can occasionally result in traction issues under aggressive acceleration, though the four-wheel-drive system quickly stabilizes the vehicle.

Off-Road Capability

While designed for luxury, the Ranger Platinum retains the Ranger's excellent off-road performance. It features six driving modes—Normal, Eco, Towing, Slippery, Mud, and Sand—along with hill descent control and advanced traction management systems. Even novice drivers can navigate off-road terrain with ease.

Safety Features

Safety is a priority, with features such as Emergency Brake Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control, Blind Spot Monitoring, and Lane-Keeping Assist. Additional systems include Reverse Brake Assist, Active Park Assist, and a 360° camera. The truck also comes with a comprehensive airbag system and collision mitigation technology.

Practicality and Running Costs

The Ranger Platinum supports a payload of 1,055 kg, qualifying for VAT exemptions for businesses, and can tow up to 3.5 tonnes. However, its V6 engine results in relatively high fuel consumption, with real-world figures averaging around 23 mpg—lower than the official 28 mpg rating.

Pricing and Conclusion

Priced at £46,450 (excluding VAT), the Platinum trim commands a premium over the Wildtrak, offering a more exclusive appearance and enhanced features. While it doesn’t introduce significant functionality beyond the Wildtrak, its luxurious design and superior comfort make it a standout choice for business owners or individuals seeking an upmarket pickup.

In summary, the Ford Ranger Platinum delivers a blend of style, capability, and luxury, making it a compelling option for those wanting a truck that performs both on and off the road with flair.
