UK New Van Market Experiences Decline in January 2025
In January 2025, new van sales dropped by 20.5%, according to data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). A total of 19,050 vans, pick-ups, and 4x4s were registered, marking a second consecutive month of decline. This downturn was attributed to challenging economic conditions and weakened business confidence.
While small van registrations saw a rise of 89.8%, other segments faced significant drops. Large van registrations, which represent the majority of the market, fell by 22.3%. Medium vans also saw a 30.4% decline. The market for 4x4s and pick-ups also saw reductions of 27.2% and 6.5%, respectively.

However, battery electric van (BEV) adoption continued to rise, with BEV registrations growing by 12.4% to 1,464 units, taking a 7.6% market share. The SMMT expects BEV sales to continue growing, with a projected market share of 10.6% in 2025.
Despite these advancements, the SMMT calls for continued government support to meet electric vehicle targets, particularly in terms of infrastructure and fiscal strategies.
